Stephen P. Sweeting, MA, MRICS 

 

Stephen P. Sweeting has been a professional appraiser of fine art, antiques, and decorative arts for over 30 years. He began his career in the art and antiques industry in the early 1980s, working in the dealer and auction sectors before transitioning to full-time appraisal practice in 1990.

As a founding principal of Toronto-based Appraisal Associates, he provided formal appraisals for private collectors, businesses, insurers, and public institutions. From 1993 to 2023, the firm served major museums and galleries across Canada, specializing in Certified Canadian Cultural Property donations, gifts-in-kind donations, and insurance coverage valuations.

A Chartered Arts & Antiques Surveyor (MRICS) with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) since 2009, Mr. Sweeting maintains ongoing professional development in compliance with RICS standards. He previously held the designation of Accredited Senior Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) from 1999 to 2010.

Mr. Sweeting holds a Master of Arts – Integrated Studies (Cultural Studies) from Athabasca University and an Honours BA from the University of Toronto. He has been recognized with academic and professional awards from Athabasca University, the American Society of Appraisers, and the province of Alberta.

Beyond appraisal practice, he has taught at the graduate level and contributed extensively to academic and industry publications on valuation and the art market. His most recent article, “Evaluating the Valuers,” was published in the Summer 2024 edition of Canadian Underwriter.

In 2024, following the passing of his long-time business partner, Edie Yeomans, FASA, Mr. Sweeting established S. P. Sweeting Appraisals. He continues to serve clients with a network of experienced colleagues and specialized consultants, ensuring authoritative and comprehensive appraisal services.
