Stephen P. Sweeting, MA, MRICS 

 

Working in dealer and auction sectors of the art and antiques business in the 1980s, Stephen P. Sweeting has been a full-time personal property appraiser since 1990. A founding valuer in Toronto-based Appraisal Associates, the firm issued over 2,400 formal, written appraisals during its lifetime. Clients included private collectors, businesses, professional services firms, insurance companies and public institutions. Most major museums and public galleries in Canada were clients of the firm. Appraisals were issued for Certified Cultural Property donations, charitable (gifts-in-kind) donations, insurance coverage, insurance claims review, sale advisory and other purposes. 


Trained as a Personal Property valuer by the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), Mr. Sweeting was an Accredited Senior Appraiser with the society from 1999 until 2010. In 2009 he qualified as a member of the globally-recognized Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). In that same year he was elected into the Institution as a Chartered Arts & Antiques Surveyor (MRICS designation). This accreditation is maintained and current.

Stephen P. Sweeting has a Master of Arts – Integrated Studies specializing in Cultural Studies from Athabasca University. He also holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Toronto. Mr. Sweeting has been awarded academic and professional scholarships by the American Society of Appraisers, Athabasca University and the province of Alberta. 

 

In addition to practicing as a full-time appraiser for over 30 years, he taught an on-line, Masters-level course on the intersection of art and crime at Athabasca University in the early 2010s. He has held senior editorial positions at the Journal of Integrated Studies and The Art & Crime Gazette.  As well, he has authored a wide range of valuation and collectable-related articles in trade, academic and other publications. 

 

Mr. Sweeting started S. P. Sweeting Appraisals in early 2024 after the unfortunate passing of his business partner of almost 30 years in 2022 — Ms. Edie Yeomans, FASA.  S. P. Sweeting Appraisals works together with a network of qualified colleagues and consultants to serve clients of all types.
